[EL] blog 3

Maybe I am slacking. But I really mean it when I was writing this article. I have fed up of the annoying single-sex education. Since I have the chance, I must try to vent my dissatisfaction but not keeping mute any more.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is single sex school a good choice for secondary school student? This argument has last for centuries. What I want to say here is, no, absolutely no! As a student who is right now experiencing the agony of single-sex school, I strongly oppose the argument that single-sex school is better than co-edu school (although I am the positive). People who haven’t experienced it might think single-sex school is good. However, these people would never know the misery of students like me. As a healthy and normal 16-year-old boy, it is reasonable for me to be attracted by peer females. It is human nature. I believe everyone would understand this feeling. Getting in touch with opposite sex has nothing to do with immoral but a natural phenomenon affecting by hormone. However, I, and tens of thousands of students like me, am deprived from this basic needing. How can I bear things like this to happen!
Single-sex education separates male and female students in separated buildings or schools. The practice was predominant before the mid-twentieth century. Single-sex education is often advocated on the basis of tradition, as well as religious or cultural values. However, things have changed! The time is flying. Our mind should also develop along with the world. Single-sex schools are built because of the corny concepts in the ancient time. At that time, males and females are strict separated. Communication without permission of the elderly was regarded as disgraceful. Single-sex schools are built for this purpose. Nowadays, concepts like boys and girls cannot get together are totally out of fashion and eliminated. So, what is the reason that people still establish single-sex school? No way to do so! Even school like the one with the longest history in Singapore should transform to co-education school!
In fact, single-sex schools do have some constructive benefits. For example, in a single-sex school, gender roles can be subverted. This means that students can choose the subjects they are really good at. Girls can comfortably choose art and lit as boys may choose science and math. They would not need to learn something that only the opposite sex is good at and are able to major in their strong suits. Another significant point is that, according to scientists’ study, boys and girls receive and process information differently. For example, girls hear better than boys. According to this result, we would rather call for boys to sit closer to the front of the classroom than what we usually do now that arranges girls sitting in the front. However, in a single-sex school, these problems can be avoided by setting special study programs which are only aimed at a certain sex. The most significant benefit (maybe) of single-sex school comes from the restriction of contact with the opposite sex. Adolescents at my age may be very keen on relationships between male and female. That’s the truth. I have to confess that I am also distracted by it. In a co-education school, some cases like these may happen: boys are embarrassed to ask a question or do well in school when girls are present in their classrooms; girls are more concerned with their looks and actions then class work when boys are present. This may somehow disturb students’ study.
However, even there are so many drawbacks of co-ed school, I still support it. Not only because I am eager of girls, but also because it is crucial for a person to learn to get along with others, in this case, especially opposite sex. The god create both male and female is not only for fun, but for them to coordinate, to learn from each other, to complement each other. Both male and female have their own advantages. Males are good at logic while females are good at emotional composition. Males are strong while females are careful doing things. When boys and girls are mixed together, they would be influenced subtly by the other and such to perfect their characters. Sometimes they may distract by this relationship, however, most of the time they will cherish it and to do their best in front of the other. There is this possibility that one may study very hard to improve one’s image in the others mind. This may not be quite suitable somehow. However, it is necessary for teens to experience all in order to grow up. That is the way they will learn much more apart from the textbook.
Another point is that single-sex education will strengthen gender stereotype. As all girls are doing art and all boys are doing science, the society may polarize and finally bring unpredictable disasters.
Now at last, I want to repeat my point, co-education school is better than single-sex school anyhow and we need to abolish single-sex school. I believe my spring is coming soon.

[English /Social studies Assignment] Democracy creates stability in a society

[English /Social studies Assignment]
Democracy creates stability in a society (individual work)

Democracy is a very common government system applied by most countries. It ensures people’s rights of participating domestic decisions making either directly or indirectly. Under this condition, people remain the sovereignty of their countries and the right to speak out.
During a long time, people were living under the monarchy. At that time, a country was usually ruled by a single person—the king. The subjects were the property of him. People didn’t have the right to make decisions for their country, to propose or even to live. People were deprived and maltreated. How could such a society be stable?
After World War II, people were tired of warfare and looking forward to peace. In order to build a stable society, most countries began to implement democracy.
After the wave of democratization, some countries successfully created stability, such as Spain and Argentina. However, some other counties felled in this evolution, like Soviet Union. It’s odd. All these countries applied democracy, why some succeeded but some felled?
Firstly, we should appreciate the meaning of stability. Stability is a social phenomenon. It composes many aspects, such as economy, politics and society. Stability of a society may refer to meeting all these conditions. That is not a single word “democracy” can explain.
Personally, I think a government cannot decide the stability of a society all by itself. Democracy is a method to achieve the goal, stability, but not the goal itself. Just like a cup which helps us to drink but it is not water. What is really important is the conditions of the country and how the leaders’ administration. A poor country can only become rich by trading or producing but not a government system.
However, we should also realize that democracy really bring us a lot of advantages. As I mentioned above, democracy respect every citizen in a society. Everyone has the right to express his own opinion. This allows a more complete consideration and meets people’s need of fairness. Furthermore, separated power could avoid dictatorship such to avoid useless conflicts. Besides these, democracy could indicate all people’s interest but not only a specific part of aristocrats. To satisfy most people’s need so that to reduce the conflict. Under democratic system, options are decided by the public, results are also shouldered by the public.
In such a way, government is constantly renewed, needs are also satisfied. The society should be obviously improved and stable. However, things usually do not go that way. Democracy is mostly practiced in the form of referendum or election. In these cases, the majority won but the minority loss. This contrarily causes instability. On one hand, the majority is happy; on the other hand, the minority is suffering, this causes a conflict. That is the fatal drawback which democracy is always facing.
In a word, we should appreciate democracy. It helps the process to stability. At the same time, we should resolve the conflict it brings to us. In this way we can achieve the goal of a stable society. (503 words)

[SS/EL] Democracy Creates Stability in a Society

DEMOCRACY
Democracy is a system of government by which political sovereignty is retained by the people and either exercised directly by citizens or through their elected representatives. In a democratic state, citizens have the right to make decisions of civil issues either directly or indirectly. The authority is usually controlled by most of the public in this countries.
Democracy is a relatively advanced government system. In which it is advanced is that citizens can propose their own opinions. These opinions may not be the same, sometimes they may even be opposite, but this is exactly democracy's advantage. Apparently, it may look disorder, but finally it would be alleviated by understanding and appreciation. The result is shouldered by all citizens. Democracy respects everyone, but not blindly follow some individuals instruction. In such doing, people can at least express their personally views.
Democracy is a good government system. So I believe democracy would create stability.

INDEPENDENCE OF KOSOVO

Independence of Kosovo

17th February,2008, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia.

I was shocked and bewildered when I first heard this news. Independence again. From now on, the Yugoslavia has been divided into 7 countries. All these 7 countries are in chaos and poverty. Independence, is not always as good as it sounds.

The reason of Kosovo’s separation was quite common. Ethnic conflict between Kosovo and Serbia has been occurring for more than ten years in this area. Most of the residents in Kosovo are Albanian. In Serbia, Slavic people are the majority. From the 1980s, Kosovo has began fighting for independence. The Albanians established their own government and elected their own president. However, this did not bring them freedom, but plunged them into war and turbulence. The tension between the two places developed higher than any time before. Then the Kosovo War broke out. I cannot tell how scared the scene was, but thousands of Albanians were killed. At last, American armies came and “stopped” the slaughter.

I don’t know how Kosovo can be independent. Maybe that will thanks to America. However, is it a real independence? I don’t think so. Although Kosovo declare its independence, also many countries have already recognized it, but can Kosovo really live independently? In a short term, it’s impossible. With such circumstances and terrible relationship with countries beside, maybe it would be poorer and cannot live alone any more.

Furthermore, is it really good for Kosovo to be independence? I believe the answer is “no”. We can understand. We know people in Kosovo are living in an abyss of misery. Wherever are flames of war. People even don’t know whether they can live till the next moment. Adults cannot get a home, children cannot get to school. All the thoughts in their minds are horror. But can these problems be solved by independence? I don’t think so. The original idea of being independence is to get out of Serbia’s dominance and live a better life. Now Kosovo is being independent, how’s their dream? Still cannot achieve. Maybe it becomes even much harder to realize. Along with the independence of Kosovo, the conflict between Kosovo and Serbia will certainly increase. Not only Serbia, but also other races beside or inside Kosovo will come out and oppose it. Kosovo’s future, is surely becoming bleaker.

Of course we cannot blame Kosovo in our position. But something I still want to emphasize is that the independence of Kosovo will certainly causes bigger and deeper conflict. Other powers will definitely interfere in this case. At that time, how will the Earth rotate is going to harder to anticipate. The other aspect is about laws. The International Laws has made very clear that sovereignty of every state cannot be infringed. The United Nation also has decided the property of Kosovo which belongs to Serbia. If even under these rules can Kosovo be independent, what else cannot happen. If there is this exception, there will soon be many exceptions. Then the order of the whole world will be disrupted.

At last, I should personally add one statement. The world is round. People are equal. What can’t we just tolerant others. And our world will be nicer.
